Foreword

The Finishing Room writes down what happens to a printed sheet between the press and the shelf: how it is folded and gathered into signatures, how those signatures are sewn or glued, how the block is trimmed, and how a case is built around it. Each folio takes one question a binder or a print buyer actually asks, answers it in the opening paragraphs, then sets out the measurements, the order of operations and the sources the desk read. The notes are filed under four cahiers, Binding Methods, Finishing and Equipment, Paper Board and Adhesive, Workshop Practice, and each carries the date it was last checked.
